A little something you may not know about me is that I LOVE to wrap presents. I love wrapping them up just as much as I like giving them (not quite as much as I like receiving them though - ha!). I would never really classify myself as "crafty", but I do get serious about wrapping. No gift should ever go without a bow, right? So I get super excited about packaging up my print orders because it is just like wrapping birthday and Christmas presents. My clients are delighted with the extra pretty added with all that wrapping. I decided to take pictures of my latest wrapped masterpiece before it went out to my client. This amount of pretty always makes me giddy. Each bow-adorned box contains the beautiful prints that my client ordered. Those prints are lovely works of art in their own right and will hopefully be cherished and adored for many years to come. Oh, and the best part...this particular order is not even complete. We still have books in production. Yay - more for me to wrap :)

This blue-eyed cutie received her First Communion and in celebration of this special day, and after all the official parties and services, I got to take some portraits of her! I was baptized Catholic and received my First Communion so I know how much fun it can be. At that age, wearing the pretty white dress is not as much fun as it is when you are much older...all I remember is how itchy it was. But pictures from that experience are special and serve to document a spiritual journey. I wish this little angel all the best in her journey and I hope these photos will be cherished for a very long time :) Amen...

Once upon a time. In the land of flowers an faires, lived a happy little girl named Hannah. She was a very smart, strong and brave little girl. Hannah had a very special Grammy that lived far, far away. Hannah loved her Grammy with all her heart, which is why it made her sad that her Grammy lived a long distance away. But much to Hannah's delight, her Grammy would come to visit and shower her with love. On one such visit, Hannah and her Grammy had a fairy garden tea party and invited their fairy friends, Curtis and Tinker Bell. Hannah's Mommy and Daddy were also invited. So there among all the beautiful flowers and herbs Hannah, her beloved Grammy and her fairy friends had a magical tea party full of laughs, hugs and tons of love. Hannah's photographer Mommy snapped some photos of this special day so Hannah and her Grammy could cherish the day for all time. Hannah was the happiest little girl in all the land and they all lived happily ever after...

Daddy's Little Girl V | Milwaukee Photographer

I sort of feel bad for the Daddy of this little sweetheart. She is full of cuteness! And her secret weapon is that pout-y face...who could say no to that? The piggy-tales make it all the more dangerous! Daddy is certainly in for it...but since she is only 2 we can revel in the cuteness of it all.

She did not want to sit still...she was quite the busy body. Reminded me so much of my little beauty just a year ago.

Even at 2, she is already rocking a fabulous style! I absolutely LOVE her pink cowgirl boots. Why don't they make those in my size? The contrast of her country chic outfit against the urban backdrop of the Third Ward made her my urban cowgirl model. Love. Love. Love!!!!!

Another great shoot in Pennsylvania! A child-hood friend (and second cousin to my best friend) booked me to photograph her three daughters. While all three girls are sweet, fun and did I mention beautiful, I got a kick out of how different their personalities are. Their differences shined through in the photos. The oldest is a bit shy and couldn't stand to be wearing a dress! The middle daughter was able to bring on the attitude when I asked her to demonstrating her more theatrical side. The youngest -- only 2 -- is a dainty little thing, but that compact frame barely contains her dynamic personality. What a crew! Here are some shots from our morning together.

I recently visited friends and family in the Philadelphia area. Much to my delight people wanted to book me for photo shoots while I was in town. My cousins, Kirsten and Dana decided they wanted to do a sister shoot. I was very excited because: 1. they are GORGEOUS and who doesn't love to take pictures of pretty; 2. I would get to hang out with these awesome girls for a little.

They are amazing! I am blown away by how old they are already...I should explain that I used to be a mommy's helper to my aunt and would entertain and care for them when they were babies -- yes babies!?!?! They have blossomed into stylish, smart, fun, ambitious and absolutely beautiful college students. I only wish we lived closer so we could see each other more regularly (thank goodness for Facebook - ha!).

As sisters go, they seem very close and also very different from each other. Much like my sister and I are. Kirsten favors her dad's side of the family (my dad's brother), while Dana is almost a mirror image of her mom. They both got the best of both sides of the family. AND they turned on their model mode for me so I was able to get awesome pictures.

By the way, They actually hiked around this wooded nature trail in those shoes! They are true 20-somethings (it is at around 30 that the heels start to make your body sore for a week after wearing them...I should know). It all made a for a really fun and fierce shoot. Exciting news...
Great things happening at Chrissy Rose Photography!

First, (and perhaps most exciting of all), I am in the business of wedding photography. Yep, that's right all your brides- and grooms-to-be...I can be there to capture your blissful wedding story. From the romance, prettiness, touching moments and moments of touching (well, just a little)...I am now available for all your nuptial needs. And don't forget that I also offer engagement packages. Second, I am now an official blogger with Shorewood Patch. My blog is a photo-essay about the things, places and people that make the Village of Shorewood (where I live) great. I am super excited about this project!

Third, I am visiting with one of my favorite photographers for a day-long, one-on-one workshop in August! Kristin Weaver, of Kristen Weaver Photography, is welcoming me into her world and teaching me a little something about this thing call photography - ha! She is such an amazing talent and I can't wait for August to roll around!

I had a great photo shoot with a beautiful young lady. She is will graduate class of 2012 so she is finishing up her junior year and gearing up for her senior year! It is a very exciting time. I was happy to be her portrait photographer. We are a little early of course, so we plan to get together again in the summer, but in the meantime here are some from this shoot to share. Party like a rock star! | Milwaukee children & event photography

Hannah's third birthday party was a smash hit! The kids had a blast decorating wings or capes and playing with their wands or swords (this fairy party was very gender neutral). Then they danced and sang in a mini-music class led by Miss Abbie from Music Makers & More. Last but not least, they ate some yummy birthday treats. Hannah had a great time hosting her friends. These kids are so cute together. And I just love these pictures. Regretfully however, most of these shots were not taken by me. My sister had to take over photo taking duties because it is just too hard to do it all: mommy, hostess, party planner, event manager, bathroom attendant, cupcake lighter, food replenisher, and so on... The experience made me realize how important it is to hire a photographer to take the photos during these events. I do offer those services, but unfortunately, I couldn't clone myself for this party. Oh well, Aunt Heather (my sister, Hannah's aunt) did a great job. Enjoy the photos!

What a Great Organization | Milwaukee Event Photographer

I had the pleasure and honor of serving as the event photographer for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man & Woman of the Year event on March 10 at the Marcus Theater in Brookfield. It was a wonderful event and I got to hear from and meet so many inspiring folks. I can never leave those event without sheading a few tears. I am always moved by the stories of strength, hope and courage of the families effected by blood cancers -- especially the children.

This event was to introduce the candidates for the Man and Woman of the Year. Each candidate has to raise money for the organization. The one with the highest amount raised wins...sounds to me like everyone wins so I hope it is an outrageously close battle among them all - ha! Good luck to all the candidates!

Hannah turns 3! | Milwaukee children photographer

Three years ago today one of the greatest people that I have ever met entered into this world. She was actually due 5 days earlier, but just didn't want to come out of the cozy little cocoon I had made for her. And who could blame her really? We had a good time over that nine months. But I was just about sick of being so huge so she had to come out. On March 20, 2008 at 9:44 PM, Miss Hannah was born. She was such a beautiful baby...and such a cuddler! She would just curl her little body right under my chin. Oh how I miss those days! She is still a cuddler, but her long body makes it a little hard to get into those old curling positions these days. So today she turns three. She is quite simply amazing and I love her so much. I took some special big girl pictures of her in honor of her special day. These photos make me weepy because even at 3 years old, she looks so grown up. I wish I could hit pause and keep things from moving ahead too fast, but I guess every mother says that. At least these pictures freeze time a little...

(oh and these are just a few of my favorites that I could actually get through quickly...there are so many others!!!)

There is something special about the way a newborn smells. It makes most women...myself included, just melt. And as hard and Johnson and Johnson tries, they can't quite bottle that near perfect soft scent. I had the pleasure of spending an entire morning smelling the sweet newborn scent of this little guy. One proud mama | Milwaukee Area Senior Portrait Photographer

While I was in Florida last weekend for other photo shoots and fun, I got to visit with my dear friend, Erica and her son. Her son has been accepted into the Naval Academy and will be leaving the nest in June. It is such an accomplishment and everyone is so proud of him...no one more then his mama however.

Erica is a special kind of gal. I call her Google (among other heartfelt nicknames) because she seriously knows something about everything. That was a great quality to have in a co-worker when we worked together at the Ringling Museum (she is still there, and should be running the place by now, btw). She is such a supportive friend too with just the right kind of comfort to send (i.e. a handmade quilt of joyously bright colors to cheer you and warm you at the same time). We have been friends for a few years now -- first working side by side at the Museum and now as long distance buds keeping up with eachother via Facebook, blogs and emails. I was among the lucky and loved to receive the text message sharing the great news about her son getting his acceptance letter to the one school he has dreamed about his entire life. Then I got an even better honor by being asked to take his senior photos next time I visited Florida. Here we are in February and I was finally able to fit it in.

Meet Alec. He is destined for greatness. You can just see it in his eyes. His smile might be slightly crooked, but there is nothing off balance about this kid. I say this with a tear in my eye...our country is very lucky to have someone like Alec dedicating himself to one of the finest military higher educational institutions in the country. He will learn and serve with strength, pride and intelligence. I am sure we will all benefit from Alec's promising future. I just hope he never forgets that he is who he is largely because of one awesome lady...his mom.

I love those evenings when I get to out of the house and participate in something inspiring. Last night was one of those times. I attended a talk by Alec Soth hosted by the Haggerty Museum of Art. Soth is an American photographer that produces large-scale photography projects. His photographs are part of collections at museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Walker Art Center. And he is also part of the current exhibition at the Haggerty Museum, "The Truth is Not in the Mirror: Photography and a Constructed Identity." You can check out Alec Soth's blog to learn more about him. But this is my blog so I am going to talk about what I think...

What I liked about Alec Soth's work is its photojournalistic feel. His photos tell a story. He approaches them all as experiments and trials, which is basically how I feel about a lot of my photography work. I kept thinking back to my 365-photo challenge. The photos in that collection document my journey to learning more about photography. I would say that it documents my year, but it really didn't. There are a lot of milestones and moments from last year that do not appear in that collection. Most of the images are of what I saw around me. My motivation was to stretch my abilities at the various stages of photo making (subject, composition, camera settings, shooting, post processing, etc.) But just because it isn't an accurate telling of my complete life, it is still a story and one that I am extremely proud of. I love that you can see my development as a photographer from one photo to the next. I love that each photo has its own back story. I love that there are some photos that I absolutely hate because those are the ones I probably learned the most from.

For those of you not in the know. My 365-day photo challenge was a photo project I did Dec 7, 2009 - Dec. 6, 2010. The rules were simple: produce and post one photo per day for a year. I posted my work to my Facebook page. I call it a challenge because it was -- I was often frustrated. But it was just the push I needed to make myself "figure it out". I learned a great deal during the year, but by the end, I realized I still have a way to go.

Soth said something really interesting that stuck with me "I am embarrassed to say I am a photographer because who isn't". Isn't that the truth? Everyone takes pictures, right? Every middle-class parent seems to have a DSLR camera. So what makes me so special? What makes me think I can be an artist? I haven't quite figured that out yet. Perhaps that's what the next leg of my journey is about...finding my photographic voice and answering that question. If so, Alec Soth was the first to send me on my way with some encouraging words. At the book signing after his talk he wrote:

New Year Resolution

Let's face it, we all have room to improve. Somehow it seems so refreshing to commit to improving yourself as the calendar changes and a new year begins. So here I am on Jan. 1st declaring one of my new year's resolutions while actually doing it. That is, of course, to making blogging a priority and to update my blog regularly. It isn't easy. Writing takes a lot of effort and I am often too exhausted to want to think that much on the blog. Lucky for me (and you), I am a photographer so I can let my images do a lot of the talking.

2010 was an interesting year for me. I feel like I reinvented myself with actually and legitimately starting my photography business. It was not easy. Maybe that is why I was/am so determined. Photography challenges me every day and as a result I feel like I am growing so much. I am so grateful to the many people out there that have cheered me on, taught me something and genuinely believed in me -- especially my husband and daughter. I can't wait to see what 2011 has in store! I have so many wishes, dreams and plans...I hope I can make them all happen.

The past few months have been filled with holiday joy. My holiday special was pretty popular and I got to capture some beautiful moments along the way. I will end this blog with a few of my favorites from those sessions.

With the holidays right around the corner, it is time for holiday sessions! These shots were taken in a mini-session format at Doctor's Park in Fox Point. Doctor's is one of my favorite locations because of the beautiful park and Lakefront beach. It is a little hike, but who doesn't love a little fresh air!

This sweet family was a little nervous starting out. They've never had family photos taken! I was honored to be their first photographer and I hope they had as much fun as I had. Baby N was such a cutie and he made all the right faces for me. Here are some shots from our shoot.

I met up with this beautiful expecting family in the Third Ward...what a location! It was an awesome Sunday morning -- a little chilly, but we had a great time and got some awesome photos. I had to bribe the little one a little with m&ms and jelly beans and we ended the session with a a very sticky, mickey-shaped lollipop, but it was all worth it. I am sure I completely ruined her breakfast since the family was headed out for pancakes after the session...but I think mom and dad were OK with it after seeing what cute photos were were able to get as a result.

I love the extra attention they paid to their clothing. It made such a difference for over all style in the photos. Spending that little extra time and money to coordinate wardrobe is so important to making great stylized photos. The outfit on the little girl is actually the same outfit I have for my daughter to wear for our family holiday photos. We are scheduled withAngie McMonigal on Nov. 6th. All our outfits are ready to go...have been for weeks now, so what does my hubby do? He dresses our daughter in the outfit on this very morning and she shows up wearing it when we met up for breakfast. I was a little shocked! That is what I get for not hiding it from unsuspecting dad (even though I showed him the outfits and told him all about my plans...) Of course, it ended up with eggy and ketchup on it. Luckily I was able to get it out so we will still look great for the photos.

Well, it is just shameful how long it has been since I last posted anything on my blog. That has a lot to do with how wonderfully busy I have been. The summer was insane with photo shoots and family time. Now we are almost through October and it is hard to believe we are heading into the holidays - eek! In addition to continuing with photo shoots, I have been developing my business and building my website. The website is now live! Check it out at www.chrissyrosephotography.com. I have portfolio galleries, information about pricing, and tons of other stuff. I can hardly believe that one year ago, I set out to build a photography business and here I am now a professional photographer. Someone pinch me!

This summer I attended a workshop by Courtney Fries and it was an incredible experience. I admire her work so much and I was thrilled to learn from her.

I also made a few significant upgrades, including a new camera body, new lens and Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3. WOW!!! I said goodbye to my old canon dslr and I am now shooting with the magnificent Canon 7D. It was actually hard to let go of that old gal, but the new one is so awesome!

I am so grateful to all the encouragement, inspiration and support I have received from friends, family and professionals I deeply admire. So here I am saying hello, again and this time it is as an ambitious professional photographer. There is just no stopping me now - ha!

Almost didn't make it!?!?

Can you believe that I almost didn't make it to this shoot? I was heading to the shoot from another function -- coming from the opposite direction and I got COMPLETELY lost! GPS failed me...it doesn't happen often, but when it does it is a disaster. Furthermore, I didn't have their phone number to call them - YIKES!! Luckily they waited for me because we got some awesome pictures! This family was awesome to work with and they were so understanding! I hope the great pics made up for making them wait.

These are my friends from Switzerland. They actually live here now, but they still have strong ties with their native country. The children even speak both languages! It was such a delight taking their picture. These kids really know how to ham it up!

Can you believe how sweet this little guy is? He has amazing eyes and the happiest toothless smile I have ever seen. You can't help but smile yourself when you see it. At just 6 months old, he is already a charmer!

He is here. He is beautiful and such a good baby. He is such a loved little man. I enjoyed taking these pictures of him at just a couple of weeks old. It still amazes me how someone so young, small and fragile can command a room, melt hearts in an instance and inspire complete strangers. Such a sweetie...

Meet Dave and Megan...soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Even though the "i dos" are not official, they are very much a family already with their fur-babies, Emma and Maebee. I had so much fun taking their picture that I quickly ran out of memory card space..oops! I still have some great ideas for more engagement session photos so you may be seeing these two again. This high school senior is a rising star! She is finishing up her last year before headed to the college of her dreams. This girl is always busy -- working hard to stay on top --, but on this day she let loose for some pictures. Despite gusts of wind interrupting our photo shoot, it was a pleasure to capture a glimpse of this young lady's vitality.

This special little lady reminds me of Alice in Wonderland with her cute dress and headband. She has quite an adventurous life keeping up with twin brothers, Henry and Nick. These boys adore their older sister and it was so such a joy to take their photos. Mom did a great job of coordinating their Easter outfits, which make the photos all the more beautiful.

Who doesn't remember getting into trouble with your cousins as a kid? Usually cousins are a mix of older and younger kids and when I was a kid somehow being around cousins always turned on the crazy switch. There was happy screaming louder then I ever screamed, joyous running for hours and lots of laughing. Although there was always those silly fights too. Don't know what it is about cousins getting together.

These beauties are cousins and it was so much fun to take their pictures! They didn't act crazy, but they were full of happiness.
